Scott and Sunny

Scott McFarland of McFarland Performance Horses and his six-year-old gelding, Conquistadors Sun, just earned a Top Ten Jacket by placing sixth in the Limited Open Reining Class at the Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio. Scott trains "Sunny" at the Westfall Horsemanship facility in Mt. Gilead, Ohio.

"This year has been a lot of fun, riding and showing with Stacy and Jesse," Scott says, "Earning a Top Ten Jacket was just icing on the cake. Sunny will make someone a great Rookie, Limited Non-Pro Horse."

2008 Quarter Horse Congress October-22-2008

Ok...... I know it's been awhile since i updated the site. I don't know where the time went !!!! We were busy showing all year, and we had a great year. We qualified for the Tradition, went out and showed well. We didn't make it to Oklahoma City .... but were close. the beginning of October we headed off to Congress and showed for the week. We also had an opportunity to see our good friends from Ohio, Scott & Terri McFarland, Jesse & Stacy Westfall, and met some new friends. We had a blast while we were there, and everyone showed well. Scott started the group off in the pen. He and Sunny put together an awesome run and found themselves in the TOP TEN ( tied 6th ) when it was all said and done. Scott was ecstatic as were all of us with his and Sunny's run. On Tuesday, Helen and Stacy got their shots in the pen. Helen in the Ladies class and Stacy in the Futurity. Helen and Izzy were the victims of a kick out coming thru the middle.... and that was all it took to be out of it !! Stacy showed the " Twins ". First on Alea, next on Vaquero..... This pairing is going to be huge !!!!!
Stacy had a great time, showing both of Can Can Lena’s twins, Alea and Vaquero. She finished fourth in the Limited Open Futurity riding Vaquero, and tied for ninth with Alea. Vaquero’s finish qualified for the finals, and Stacy was draw six out of thirty-some horses.

When she ran with Vaquero she took the lead and led with the high score until around draw fifteen. "That was really exciting,” Stacy says. “I knew that my score (218.5) was not strong enough to hold to the end, but I was very happy with how Vaquero showed. He felt like he was confident and calm going in, showing and coming out. That’s more important to me than anything.”

Helen ended up in the TOP TEN (tied 9th) in the Novice Amatuer class and won her Jacket and medal. Daphne Ross also showed all week, and just missed getting her Top Ten as she finished 12th !!!! But that was still good for a jacket.

Ann Russer also showed, as did Jesse Westfall. Both had nice runs. For me ....... it was just a great week. Being around the group that we had was an absolute ball. There was alot of great food... thanks to my lovely wife !!! The camping was the most relaxing thanks to my lovely wife, and Daphne !! Being with friends you don't see all the time was priceless ... thanks to all of you guys. You know who you are. We also had an opportunity to go out to the Corral with some new friends we met there, and had an extremely good time !!!!! So good it lasted till 5:00 am the next morning !!!!! Thanks Ann !!!!!

So ,..... that in a nutshelll was our week. Much more than i could ever type here. It was AWESOME !!! We look forward to it next year. Now we get to kick back and stay warm for the winter months.

Some great horsemen say "the most determining factor in the quality of a horse is its mother".

Most horsemen will agree that a majority of horses are only "as good as their mothers."

Figures are recklessly tossed around in everyday conversation that the mare is responsible for everywhere from 50 to 90 percent of how the colt turns out and though no one has seemed to come up with the scientific answer, it is universal understanding among horsemen that a colt's mother is a very important factor when breeding. If you don't believe it, just check out prices of young horses in the sale ring. A majority of horses selling in the sale ring have great sires, but it is the dam that separates the high sellers from the mediocres.

If we were to choose one word to describe our mares, it would be "athletes". The mares in our barn possess enough physical talent themselves, to produce an "open" caliber foal. And that is what you need to compete today . . . in every division.
